NIE - Foreigners ID Number

Número de Identificación de Extranjeros. Everyone who owns or is buying property in Spain must get an NIE number. Once you own a property there are taxes which must be paid and your NIE number acts as your identification as far as your financial responsibilities go.  It is relatively easy to obtain an NIE number - any lawyer would be able to get one for you for a fee. If your lawyer is conveyancing for you then make sure that obtaining an NIE number is one of the services included.
